Homeschooling with a Christ-centered mindset is key to teaching foundational truths to our children. So how do we, as parents and grandparents, teaching and tutoring our kids and grandkids during this extended time at home also foster a view of each subject area that lines up with Biblical truth?
The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 6 to be intentional with teaching our kids to love the Lord our God with all of our heart and with all of our soul and all of our might. As many of us are trying to adjust to homeschooling our elementary, middle school, and high school children while on extended breaks from school, this is a great time to be diligent and intentional with helping our kids develop a Biblical perspective of what they are learning.
Fostering Biblical Views While Homeschooling
1. Model your trust in God’s control over all things. Research shows that a powerful way children learn about who God is and how we relate to Him is by watching others with whom they spend most of their time. The most important influence on a child’s faith development is a relationship with a Bible-believing adult. Living with a Christ-centered mindset daily will help you tremendously in homeschooling with a Christ-centered mindset.
Demonstrate Your Trust in God by:
- Pointing out what Scripture says about God’s control
- Praying with your kids and grandkids praising God for this special time together, thanking God for his provision, and asking for wisdom as you learn together
- Creating a God Sighting list where family members take turns adding a way they saw God at work that day
2. Get involved with demonstrating God’s love to others. Faith development takes place by way of relationships, actions, and thinking. Demonstrating God’s love to others helps to build and deepen relationships and creates opportunities to act in a way that demonstrates Christ’s servanthood, love, and humility.
Ways to Demonstrate the Love of Jesus Include:
- Checking in on neighbors
- Sending email or text messages of encouragement
- Offering to pick up food items for others while on errands
3. Ask questions to prompt thinking about how God and his actions appear in school assignments. While monitoring your kids’ work or while teaching the subject assignments yourself, ask questions that help them to see how God is present in all things. Kids often think that faith and learning are two separate elements of life. It is important to ask at least one question that gets kids thinking about how the big ideas of the subject area show God’s involvement. Finding God in all areas of life is simple, and seeking out opportunities is the start!
